Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, may step into the public eye next week during a high-profile memorial service for his father, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has not been seen in public since sustaining injuries in the joint US-Israeli airstrikes that killed his father on February 28 and initiated the ongoing Iran War. According to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, the upcoming memorial service is being held explicitly “on behalf of” Mojtaba as the official successor to the Islamic Revolution.
The event is scheduled for July 14, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM local time at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla.
Key Context & Notable Absences
-
The Airstrikes: Former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed alongside multiple family members—including his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and a 14-month-old granddaughter.
-
The Funeral: Massive funeral processions took over Tehran last week, grinding daily life, airspace, and transit to a halt.
-
The Missing Leader: While state television heavily broadcasted Mojtaba’s three brothers—Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud—leading the massive funeral prayers next to the family’s coffins, Mojtaba himself was entirely absent.
Because he has remained in hiding since inheriting Iran’s highest political and religious office, an appearance at this week’s memorial would mark his crucial public debut as Supreme Leader.
