In a unique welfare initiative rooted deeply in local tradition, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is set to launch the ‘Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme.’ Under this state-funded initiative, every child born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu will be gifted a one-gram gold ring.
The state government has allocated ₹755.83 crore annually for the project, and officials have been directed to immediately fast-track the tender process for its rollout.
Key Highlights of the Scheme
-
Eligibility: All children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026 (marking Chief Minister Vijay’s birthday) onward will be eligible for the scheme.
-
Official Launch: The formal launch is scheduled for September 15, 2026, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dravidian icon Perarignar Anna.
-
Cultural Roots: The initiative is inspired by the Tamil tradition of “Thai Maman Seer,” where a maternal uncle presents gifts to a newborn. Through this scheme, the state government will symbolically step into the role of the maternal uncle.
From Campaign Promise to Policy
“While political parties in Tamil Nadu have historically distributed gold rings to newborns on their leaders’ birthdays, this marks the first time the practice has been institutionalized as an official state welfare scheme.”
The gold ring initiative was a core election promise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party and was a highlight of the government’s ‘Vetri Thamizhagam Vision Document’. According to an official press release, the scheme is designed to honor Tamil cultural heritage while acting as a tangible symbol of state affection and support for growing families.
