A domestic dispute culminated in a horrific tragedy in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district late Thursday night, when a 27-year-old man allegedly shot his estranged wife dead before turning the weapon on himself.
The incident occurred in the Suryanagar Colony on Govardhan Road, according to local authorities.
The Incident
According to Superintendent of Police (City) Rajiv Kumar Singh, the deceased have been identified as:
-
Pokhan (23): A native of Datia district, Madhya Pradesh. She was living with a friend in Mathura and working at a local beauty parlour.
-
Mithun (27): A resident of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, where he was employed.
The couple had entered a love marriage five years ago. However, due to escalating differences, they had been living separately. Mithun traveled to Mathura on Thursday after tracking down his wife’s location.
Escalation Over Court Dispute
An argument reportedly broke out between the two regarding an ongoing court case. Police stated that Mithun pressured Pokhan to withdraw or settle the legal dispute. When she refused, Mithun drew a country-made pistol in a fit of rage, shooting her before immediately shooting himself in the head. Both individuals died on the spot.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that a long-standing domestic dispute and tension over a court case were the primary drivers behind this extreme step.” — Mathura Police Statement
Ongoing Investigation
Upon receiving the alert, SP City Rajiv Kumar Singh and Highway Police Station In-charge Prashant Kapil rushed to the scene with a forensic team to secure the area and collect evidence.
The bodies have been sent for a postmortem examination, and the families of both deceased have been notified. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
