Tata Motors has firmly established itself as India’s second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, according to the latest VAHAN registration data for May 2026. Delivering a massive 42% Year-on-Year (YoY) volume expansion, the automaker continues to bridge the gap with market leader Maruti Suzuki, fueled by a sweeping demand for its refreshed SUV lineup and a record-breaking performance in its electric vehicle (EV) division.
The Numbers: Domestic and Export Performance
Tata Motors reported a combined passenger vehicle sales volume of 59,790 units in May 2026, up sharply from the 42,040 units recorded during the same month last year.
The growth was balanced across both local dealerships and international shipments:
-
Domestic Market: Local volumes grew to 59,090 units, a substantial jump from the 41,557 vehicles sold in May 2025.
-
Exports: International business logged a healthy 45% increase, rising from 483 units to 700 units over the same period.

EV Division Shashes Records with 85% Growth
The defining highlight of Tata Motors’ May performance was its clean-energy portfolio. The automaker achieved its highest-ever monthly electric vehicle sales, reaching 10,517 units globally.
Electric Vehicle Milestone: Compared to the 5,685 EVs sold in May 2025, Tata Motors locked in an astronomical 85% YoY growth in the electric segment.
This momentum ensures Tata Motors holds a commanding lead over the Indian EV space. The volume surge was heavily supported by its multi-tier electric lineup, including the mass-market Tiago EV, the micro-SUV Punch EV, the segment-defining Nexon EV, and the newly launched Curvv EV coupe-SUV.
Core Volume Drivers
The brand’s dominance is anchored entirely by its high-riding vehicle portfolio. Rather than relying on traditional hatchbacks or sedans, Tata Motors’ growth engine is overwhelmingly driven by its comprehensive SUV lineup:
-
Compact & Micro-SUVs: The Tata Punch and Tata Nexon remain the primary heavy-lifters for monthly retail volumes.
-
Premium & Mid-size: The newly introduced Tata Curvv has successfully expanded the brand’s reach into the mid-size coupe-SUV segment, while the flagship Harrier and Safari twin duos maintain stable margins at the top end of the portfolio.
Company officials added that on-ground customer demand remains incredibly potent, with physical vehicle registrations on the Indian government’s VAHAN portal scaling by more than 50% YoY, proving that wholesale factory despatches are moving directly into consumer garages without clogging dealer inventory.
