A night of high-profile networking turned into a scene of terror on Saturday when a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. President Donald Trump was rushed offstage by Secret Service agents as attendees, including celebrities and journalists, scrambled for cover under tables at the Washington Hilton.
The Suspect and Arrest
Law enforcement has identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Shortly after the incident, President Trump took to Truth Social to share images of the suspect being pinned to the ground by officers.
-
The Takedown: Allen was apprehended at a screening area near the hotel ballroom.
-
Casualties: One Secret Service officer was shot during the confrontation but was saved by his bulletproof vest. The President confirmed the officer is “doing great.”
-
The Weaponry: Reports indicate the suspect was armed with multiple weapons and attempted to charge a security checkpoint.
Legal Action and Charges
US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, confirmed that Allen is in custody and facing severe federal charges.
“It is clear… that this individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” Pirro stated, noting that the checkpoint successfully prevented a larger tragedy.
Pending Charges Include:
-
Assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon.
-
Two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence.
-
Various firearms possession charges.
Arraignment: Scheduled for Monday, April 27, 2026.
“The Show Must Go On”
Despite the shooting, President Trump remained defiant, praising the bravery of law enforcement and suggesting that the gala events should continue under their guidance. He described the suspect as a “very sick person” and noted that investigators are currently searching the suspect’s California residence.
The Washington Hilton remains under heavy security, with tactical teams and National Guard personnel deployed to secure the area. While the hall was initially evacuated, the swift response of the Secret Service has been credited with preventing a “horrific event.”
