The political landscape in Punjab and Delhi has been rocked by a massive exodus from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Following Raghav Chadha’s announcement on April 24, 2026, that he is joining the BJP along with six other Rajya Sabha MPs, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann responded with a cryptic, culinary-themed jab.
The “Sabzi” Post
Bhagwant Mann, known for his satirical style, took to social media to downplay the significance of the departing MPs. In a Punjabi post, he listed seven common kitchen ingredients:
“Ginger, garlic, cumin, fenugreek powder, red chili, black pepper, and coriander—these 7 things together make the ‘sabzi’ taste great, but on their own, they can’t become a ‘sabzi.'”
The Message: Mann’s analogy implies that while these seven individuals (referring to the 7 defecting MPs) were important “spices” within the AAP framework, they lack the substance to stand as a significant political force on their own without the party’s “base.”
BJP’s Counter: “An Insult to Farmers”
The BJP was quick to turn the analogy back on Mann. Haryana CM Nayab Saini criticized the remark as a trivialization of governance and an insult to the agricultural community.
-
The “Joke” Jibe: Saini stated that Mann “does nothing but crack jokes all day,” suggesting that while his metaphors might be entertaining, they fail to address the systemic issues and the collapse of his own party’s ranks.
Anatomy of the Rebellion
Raghav Chadha’s exit is a significant blow to Arvind Kejriwal, as it effectively breaks away two-thirds of AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha.
-
The Defectors: Chadha is joined by Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Rajinder Gupta, and Vikram Sahney.
-
The Allegation: Chadha cited rampant corruption within the AAP as his primary reason for leaving, stating the party has “stepped away from honest politics” and that he refused to engage in its current wrongdoings.
-
The AAP Response: Arvind Kejriwal labeled the move a “betrayal of the Punjabi people,” while other leaders framed it as a scripted campaign by the BJP.
Context of the Rift
The relationship between Chadha and the AAP leadership soured earlier this month when:
-
He was removed as the Deputy Leader of the AAP in the Rajya Sabha.
-
The party requested the Rajya Sabha Chairman to deny Chadha speaking time from the party’s quota.
This defection marks the largest internal crisis for the Aam Aadmi Party since its inception, shifting the power balance significantly in the upper house of Parliament.
