For years, the Mercedes-Benz EQS was a technological marvel that somehow felt a bit “un-Mercedes.” While it pushed the boundaries of aerodynamics, it lacked the traditional presence of an S-Class and utilized a 400V architecture that was quickly falling behind rivals.
The 2026 facelift changes that narrative. By jumping to a new 800V architecture and pushing range into the 900 km stratosphere, Mercedes has turned its flagship EV into a genuine range king that charges as fast as it travels.
Engineering Overhaul: 800V & Massive Range
The headline of this update is the move to a high-voltage system that enables world-class charging speeds and efficiency.
-
Range Record: The EQS 450+ now boasts a staggering 926 km (WLTP) range, a 13% increase achieved via a new 122 kWh battery with optimized silicon oxide-graphite cell chemistry.
-
Hyper-Charging: The 800V system supports 350 kW DC fast charging, allowing you to add 320 km of range in just 10 minutes.
-
Two-Speed Gearbox: A new two-speed transmission on the rear axle improves low-speed punch and high-speed cruising efficiency.
-
Increased Recuperation: Regenerative braking has been dialed up to 385 kW, allowing for true “one-pedal” driving in most scenarios.
The “Steer-by-Wire” Revolution
Perhaps the most futuristic update is the optional Steer-by-Wire system, making Mercedes the first German automaker to bring this tech to a series-production vehicle.
What it does: By removing the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the tires, the car can adjust steering ratios on the fly. You only need to turn the wheel 170 degrees from lock to lock, meaning you never have to cross your arms during a U-turn or tight parking maneuver.
This system is paired with an optional yoke-style steering wheel, which provides an unobstructed view of the massive MBUX Hyperscreen. To ensure agility, the rear-wheel steering can now pivot up to 10 degrees, making this 5-meter sedan feel as nimble as a compact car.
Design & Interior: The Luxury Restoration
Mercedes has addressed the “blob-like” design concerns with sharper, more traditional cues.
| Feature | The Upgrade |
| Front Fascia | New faux-grille with an illuminated star pattern and a standing hood ornament on select trims. |
| Lighting | Digital Light setup with micro-LEDs that reach up to 600 meters while using 50% less power. |
| MB.OS | The new Mercedes-Benz Operating System with AI-powered virtual assistants and real-time 3D navigation. |
| Rear Comfort | Dual 13.1-inch entertainment screens and heated seatbelts (front/rear). |
The Verdict
The 2026 EQS facelift feels less like a mid-cycle refresh and more like a total technical reboot. By fixing the charging speeds, extending the range to nearly 1,000 km, and introducing steer-by-wire, Mercedes has finally given the EQS the “S-Class of EVs” status it was always meant to have.
