In response to escalating nationwide protests led by the Congress party and the broader opposition INDIA bloc, security has been significantly heightened around Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s Delhi residence, office, and personal detail.
Heightened Threat Perception and Security Measures
Already protected by a Z+ security cover, the CEC’s security apparatus has been further reinforced based on a revised threat assessment.
-
24-Hour Presence: Security sources confirm that a round-the-clock police deployment is now active directly outside his residence.
-
Targeted Locations: Extra security perimeters have been established at both his official workstation at the Election Commission office and his primary Delhi home.
Context of the Unrest
The aggressive protests—spearheaded by figures like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra—stem from fierce opposition demands for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The controversy intensified following reports that two other Election Commissioners (Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi) recorded objections regarding decisions tied to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The opposition has accused the poll body chief of “vote theft” and bias, with street agitations leading to high-profile detentions, sit-ins, and FIRs filed against top Congress leaders. Prior incidents included protests outside the CEC’s family home in Agra.
ECI and Government Stance
In defense of the poll body, the Election Commission has maintained that varying opinions and deliberations are standard internal practice, and all formal orders carry full legal sanction under established statutory guidelines. Meanwhile, the ruling coalition and BJP leaders have condemned the opposition’s actions, characterizing the persistent attacks on constitutional institutions as an attempt to undermine democratic integrity.
