Known globally for conquering the harshest terrains, the Toyota Hilux has taken on a vital new mission in public service. The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) has officially inducted a fleet of 15 specially modified Toyota Hilux pickup trucks to serve as rapid-response and emergency-rescue vehicles across the city.
Procured at a cost of approximately ₹19.74 crore, the fleet is designed to navigate congested or rough terrain where traditional, bulky fire engines often struggle to gain access.
Built for Tough Terrain and Rapid Response
Underneath the modifications, the Hilux retains its formidable mechanical foundation. Powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine that churns out 204 PS of power and up to 500 Nm of torque, the pickup utilizes a rugged ladder-frame construction and a capable four-wheel-drive (4×4) system.
Interestingly, the municipal body has based this new emergency fleet on the pre-facelift version of the Toyota Hilux rather than the newer models currently on the market. In addition to the 15 trucks, AFES has also bolstered its disaster-management equipment by acquiring 10 new rescue boats worth ₹3.40 crore to handle floods and water-related emergencies.

Unlike standard firefighting tenders, these modified Hilux units are optimized to act as self-contained extraction and rapid-response units. Their dedicated rear compartments are packed with high-grade emergency gear tailored for the “golden hour” after an incident:

Extrication Tools: Equipped with hydraulic cutters and spreaders designed to rescue trapped victims from severely damaged vehicles or collapsed structures.
