The British Army has entered a major procurement phase to find a new Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) fleet to replace its aging Land Rover and Pinzgauer vehicles. Estimated between £2 billion and £2.5 billion (including VAT), the massive contract could see the delivery of more than 9,500 vehicles.
Following a September 1, 2026 deadline for participation requests, seven industry teams have publicly presented their contenders, spanning British, European, North American, and Japanese automotive platforms.

JLR-led Consortium (Defender Wolf Series II): Marking a continuation of a 70-year relationship, Jaguar Land Rover is offering a military-adapted Defender based on its D7x architecture. Proposed variants include tactical, general mobility, ambulance, and utility roles.

Team Grenadier (Ineos Grenadier & Quartermaster): Partnering with UK supply-chain specialists, Ineos is offering its ladder-frame vehicle manufactured in Hambach, France, highlighting its rugged durability and existing use by European security forces.

Rheinmetall UK (Mercedes-Benz Military G-Class Family): Rheinmetall is pitching the military-grade G-Class family—including the air-transportable Caracal platform, which is already deployed by the German and Dutch armies.

Babcock and Supacat (Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series): This team presents a General Logistics Vehicle family built on the globally renowned, battle-tested Toyota Land Cruiser 70 platform, promising that about 70% of the programme value will stay in the UK.

Team LionStrike (GM Defense – Chevrolet Colorado/Silverado): Comprising GM Defense, BAE Systems, and NP Aerospace, this team offers platforms derived from Chevrolet trucks (like the Infantry Squad Vehicle), emphasizing US military pedigree and rapid air-insertion capabilities.

General Dynamics, Ford, and Ricardo (Militarised Ford Ranger / Super Duty): This partnership offers 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles built on Ford’s global production scale, featuring Dagenham-built engines and assembly work proposed in South Wales.

Fering Technologies (Pioneer X Hybrid-Electric): The London-based firm has submitted a domestically designed, hybrid-electric LMV boasting an extreme range, silent EV-only operation, and low acoustic and thermal signatures.
Next Steps: Up to seven teams are set to receive draft Invitations to Tender, engaging in dialogue and undergoing rigorous UK-based vehicle trials between October 2026 and January 2027. Underperforming contenders will face immediate elimination, with the final contract award decision slated for May 31, 2027.
