Thiruvananthapuram: In a stunning political and organizational breakthrough, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has seized control of the Tripunithura Government Sanskrit College student union from the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), securing a clean sweep of all major posts.
The landslide victory brings a definitive end to decades of uninterrupted SFI dominance at a campus long regarded as a secure stronghold for the Left in Kerala.
A Historic Shift in Tripunithura
The campus triumph mirrors a broader political transition in the local region. Recently, the BJP took charge of the Tripunithura municipality, successfully dismantling 45 years of Left-led rule in the local municipal body. Replicating this momentum on campus, the ABVP managed to unseat a student union that had remained under Left control for over four decades.
Political analysts view the result as a significant milestone in the ongoing ideological struggle for political space across Kerala’s college campuses.
Rejection of SFI’s Policies
Following the results, the ABVP framed the outcome as a direct rejection of what it termed the SFI’s “anti-student policies.” A senior ABVP representative stated that the historic win in Tripunithura will serve as a powerful morale boost for other ABVP units operating across the state.
The student organization sharply criticized the former SFI leadership, leveling allegations that included failing to adequately promote Sanskrit studies, lacking transparency in the utilization of student funds, and failing to organize meaningful campus programs during their long tenure.
