Apple Inc. has eliminated more than 200 positions across its software and hardware divisions as part of a strategic realignment toward smart glasses, updated artificial intelligence architectures, and leaner content operations.
Affected Divisions & Restructuring Details
-
Vision Pro Division (~100 jobs cut): Apple is scaling down its spatial computing efforts by largely disbanding its internal Vision Pro gaming team and downsizing the unit producing immersive 3D video content. Given the $3,699 headset’s limited user base, multi-million-dollar production costs per video episode were no longer sustainable. Apple plans to pivot toward supporting third-party content creation while shifting internal hardware priorities toward smart glasses.
-
Siri & Software Teams (~100 jobs cut): Redundancies impacted the Intelligent Systems Experience group and teams overseeing the Siri digital assistant. The cuts coincide with a overhaul of Siri’s underlying technical architecture to support next-generation AI features, requiring a shift in engineering skill sets.
Strategic Pivot Apple confirmed the moves as an effort to “evolve our business to deliver the best experiences,” noting that affected employees can apply for newly created roles within the reorganized teams. While Apple maintains that the Vision Pro platform and visionOS will continue receiving updates, internal efforts are redirecting toward near-term smart glasses development, with an updated Vision Pro model not expected until at least late 2028.
