Activist Sonam Wangchuk will end his three-week hunger strike on Monday if political leaders meet him and promise to raise education accountability in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. This announcement by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, comes shortly after the Delhi High Court rejected a plea to transfer Wangchuk from the government-run Safdarjung Hospital to a private facility.
Wangchuk’s protest, which demands the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over recent NEET question paper leaks, led Delhi police to forcibly relocate him from Jantar Mantar to the hospital on Saturday. Angmo petitioned the court to move him to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, arguing he was confined against his wishes. However, Justice Mini Pushkarna ruled that the government acted within its rights to protect Wangchuk’s failing health, noting that his ongoing cooperation with doctors shows his autonomy is intact. Senior advocate Vivek Tankha indicated that Angmo plans to appeal this ruling before a two-judge bench.
Medical reports from Safdarjung Hospital indicate that Wangchuk’s vital parameters are stable with minor improvements in his blood work. Due to the severe physiological stress of the prolonged fast, he remains under round-the-clock observation by a multidisciplinary team of medical experts.
