A fresh political storm has hit the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) as six rebel Lok Sabha MPs have officially broken cover, meeting with Speaker Om Birla to justify their exit. The dissenting lawmakers claim their decision to jump ship was triggered by a secret plan within the party’s high command to eventually merge the Thackeray faction into the Congress party.
According to sources, the rebel MPs told Speaker Birla that the party had completely deviated from its core ideology by aligning so closely with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) bloc. Beyond ideological grievances, the lawmakers cited a profound “lack of leadership” under Uddhav Thackeray, complaining that the party boss consistently ignored requests to visit their constituencies and failed to provide adequate support during elections. Access to his son, Aaditya Thackeray, was also reportedly entirely cut off.
The Strategy and Secret Rendezvous
The rebellion was meticulously executed behind closed doors before spilling into the public eye. Over a 48-hour period, the six MPs arrived in Delhi in a staggered, highly coordinated manner—many utilizing private jets—before being lodged at a hotel in Noida.
-
The Arrival: The operation was closely managed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his son, Shrikant Shinde. In fact, Shrikant Shinde personally accompanied rebel MP Omraje Nimbalkar to Delhi.
-
The Meeting with the Speaker: Following a strategy session at Shrikant Shinde’s residence, the rebel MPs met with Speaker Om Birla in separate groups to officially request a split from the Thackeray faction. They have also asked to have their parliamentary seats reassigned next to the seven MPs belonging to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.
Where the Rebel MPs Went Next
Immediately after meeting the Lok Sabha Speaker, the six MPs scattered across different locations:
| Member of Parliament | Destination |
| Nagesh Ashtikar | Tirupati (Pilgrimage) |
| Sanjay Deshmukh | Ayodhya (Pilgrimage) |
| Sanjay Jadhav | Ayodhya (Pilgrimage) |
| Bhausaheb Wagchaure | Varanasi |
| Omraje Nimbalkar | Pune |
| Sanjay Dina Patil | Mumbai |
The group is scheduled to reconvene with Eknath Shinde this coming Saturday, after which they plan to release their official letter to the Speaker and publicly explain their decision.
The Thackeray Camp Fires Back
For Uddhav Thackeray, this crisis is a painful case of déjà vu, mirroring the 2022 revolt by Eknath Shinde that collapsed his state government. The Thackeray camp has retaliated fiercely, led by senior leader Sanjay Raut, who launched a scathing attack against the defectors.
The Ultimatum: The Shiv Sena (UBT) has issued a strict seven-day show-cause notice to the six rebel lawmakers.
Furthermore, the party has petitioned Speaker Om Birla to reject the rebels’ demands for a seat change and party split, arguing that they will be facing internal disciplinary charges for “anti-party” behavior. Highlighting the severity of the fractures within the party, the Thackeray camp issued an official whip for an emergency meeting; out of the remaining nine Lok Sabha MPs, only three turned up.
If this defection is officially recognized by the Speaker—following historical precedents like the Congress crisis in Madhya Pradesh—it will significantly strengthen the Shinde faction while providing the ruling BJP coalition with six crucial votes to push forward highly contentious legislative pieces, including the women’s reservation and delimitation bills.
