A major political storm has erupted following the Election Commission’s decision to reject the Rajya Sabha nomination papers of Meenakshi Natarajan, the Congress party’s sole candidate from Madhya Pradesh.
The rejection has united various Opposition leaders who are accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of staging a “conspiracy” and a “democratic theft” to unjustly seize a parliamentary seat.
The Core Contradiction: Why the Nomination Was Cancelled
The disqualification stems from a complaint filed by BJP leader Rahul Kothari.
-
The Grounds for Rejection: The Election Commission re-evaluated and cancelled Natarajan’s candidature on the grounds that her affidavit failed to disclose a 2022 court summons issued by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Hyderabad.
-
The Congress Pushback: Congress leaders have vehemently rubbished the claims. Party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal called the non-disclosure allegation “complete humbug,” describing it as a desperate measure taken by the BJP after realizing they could not force Congress MLAs into cross-voting.
Opposition Front Mounts Fierce Attack
Leaders across the political spectrum have lashed out at both the BJP and the poll panel, pulling no punches in their public statements:
-
Mahua Moitra (TMC MP): Stated the nomination was cancelled on a “flimsy joke of an excuse,” adding that it highlights a desperate attempt to control both Houses of Parliament to amend the Constitution.
-
Revanth Reddy (Telangana Chief Minister): Outspokenly labelled the incident an act of “seat chori” (theft) and a dark day for Indian democracy.
-
V.D. Satheesan (Kerala Leader of Opposition): Condemned the move as a “blatant assault on democratic principles” that drastically weakens public faith in constitutional institutions.
-
Kamal Nath (Senior Congress Leader): Alleged foul play, pointing out that a flight scheduled to fly Congress MLAs to Bengaluru to protect them from poaching and cross-voting was “deliberately denied permission” to take off for hours.
The “Smriti Irani Reminder”
Weighing heavily into the controversy, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi targeted the Election Commission’s consistency by bringing up past discrepancies concerning BJP leaders.
“Former BJP MP Smriti Irani was allowed a Lok Sabha contest despite ‘three different educational qualifications’ on her affidavit. But Meenakshi Natarajan of the Congress has her RS nomination cancelled because her affidavit doesn’t mention some obscure complaint with no FIR & zero chance to explain to EC.” — Priyanka Chaturvedi, MP
Chaturvedi was referencing a highly publicized legal dispute from a few years ago where a petitioner alleged that Irani had provided contradictory educational qualifications in her poll affidavits across the 2004, 2011, and 2014 elections.
Escalation in Delhi
As the political temperature continues to soar, top Congress brass—including K.C. Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, and Sachin Pilot—staged a fierce protest demonstration directly outside the Election Commission’s headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday, demanding an immediate review of what they deem an unconstitutional disqualification.
Meanwhile, BJP Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya added fuel to the fire by hinting at internal sabotage. He claimed that the paperwork detailing Natarajan’s Hyderabad court summons was leaked to the BJP from within Telangana—a Congress-ruled state—suggesting a deep rift within the opposition party itself.
