Actor Rhea Chakraborty recently shared a surprising silver lining from one of the darkest chapters of her life. The “Smash The Patriarchy” T-shirt she wore on the day of her 2020 arrest became an accidental symbol of solidarity, leading to the sale of 20,000 shirts by the NGO that created it.
An Accidental Statement
Reflecting on the day she was taken into custody by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chakraborty revealed that wearing the shirt wasn’t a calculated move. Speaking to Variety India, she described her state of mind at the time:
“My cupboard was a mess, like my life. While I was searching for what to wear during the interrogation, it popped out in front of me… I looked at it and exactly felt that way. I felt a part of a very patriarchal society was targeting me in some way. And that spoke to me.”
The T-shirt had originally been sent to her and several other female actors as part of an NGO awareness campaign regarding menstrual pain.
From Prison to a Viral Movement
Chakraborty was entirely unaware of the massive cultural wave the shirt had sparked until she received a letter in Mumbai’s Byculla Jail from her close friend, Shibani Dandekar.
-
The Revelation: Dandekar’s letter detailed how the image of the T-shirt had gone viral, with thousands of social media users posting the quote in solidarity.
-
The Reaction: For Chakraborty, who had faced intense media scrutiny and hostility, the sudden wave of support felt “bizarre” but deeply resonant.
Turning Down the Commission
A year after her release on bail, Chakraborty crossed paths with the founder of the NGO behind the apparel. He informed her that her unexpected public appearance in the shirt had driven the sale of 20,000 units.
While the founder offered her a financial commission from the massive influx of sales, Chakraborty promptly declined, choosing instead to let the proceeds support the organization’s cause.
